De Vleeschouwer
To go beyond the limits of the hammam as we know it today, I went through a journey where I had to refute my own assumptions in order to arrive at new insights about the concept of “cleansing”.
This has led to an evolution in the design process where the “traditional hammam” gradually disappeared and made way for the hammam 2.0 aka. "Hammam In The Sky".
The strength of the design lies in the fact that everywhere there is a reason to look up. Our head is passively controlled to aim upwards. This embodies the direct attraction of light.
The physical cleaning takes place in the basement, the physical event. On the ground floor the social event where people can converse, drink tea or… read.
The upper floors have been preserved for the spiritual aspect of the Hammam. There is a staged skyspace, an open air skyspace, and in the attic space the ritual skyspace. The highlight of the hammam is the ritual experience in the long light well where one experiences the optical effect of floating in the sky through a reflection on the ceiling. The skyway to heaven. The sky is an extension of my design and is therefore also visualized as an extension.
Hammam in the Sky
Repurposing a former mansion in Molenbeek to an unseen hammam that excels in its uniqueness and conceptuality.
